About ‘Butterfly Crowned Priestess’ by Celeste Groenewald
Graphite on Fabriano | 2017
While researching butterfly symbolism for the commission, I went off on a Minoan tangent, and read about the connection their goddesses had with these insects. Of course, I took liberties with the symbolism, hence the improbable butterfly crown.

I am a South African artist currently living in Bloemfontein. I graduated in 2015 with a B.A. in fine arts. Many aspects of life inspire me, but my main interests are portraiture, symbol systems, anatomy, nature and vanitas. My artworks are often visual musings or dream paintings created with graphite, oil, gouache, or soft pastels, although I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and teaching myself new techniques.
