This autumn and winter bird is also called Great Goldfinch. The Northern 'trumpet' bullfinch, like the Scandinavian nominate (both called P. pyrrhula pyrrhula and Northern Bullfinch) is somewhat larger than the Dutch Bullfinches (P. pyrrhula europaea) and the males are slightly pinker and lighter grey. However, these characteristics are subtle and not always obvious (only for ringers perhaps) and there are also transitional males. Best distinguishing feature is the sound. The Northern 'trumpet' bullfinch makes a different sound, resembling the sound of a muted trumpet. This sound is also different from that of the Scandinavian nominate form; Nordic bullfinches with trumpet sound are probably from more eastern regions (Russia, Urals).
