About ‘Buddhas’ by Hans Lok

Opposite the hotel in Bangkok was an entrance to a wholesale store. Behind the entrance stood at least 200 Buddhas. All of them were spray-painted gold and ranged in size from one to at least three metres. At first glance, this turns something that is revered and has the status of a saint into a decorative object that you put in your living room or garden. But in the weeks that followed, as we travelled through Thailand and Laos and encountered Buddhas everywhere, we would see that they are more than that. The Buddha is part of the soul of the inhabitants. The gentleness of Buddhism can be seen and felt in every interaction you have. Whether it is the tuk-tuk driver or the receptionist at the hotel, you always feel that your fellow human beings are treated with kindness and civility. And so every Buddha, with his gaze, has an influence and is always a reference to how you should live.
