For my work, I regularly visit America. Similarly, this time I flew to Salt Lake City. After landing, I picked up my hire car and headed south. The further I drove, the quieter it became. The wide highways gave way to two-lane roads winding through an endless landscape of rocks and pines. With music playing in the background and my camera bag beside me, I felt that familiar calm returning.
My destination was Bryce Canyon. Known for its jagged rock formations, yet it feels new every time I am there. This time, I opted for a higher vantage point at one of the viewpoints along the canyon's rim. Instead of a large overview, I decided to zoom in. With my zoom lens, I brought the bizarre details closer: rows of reddish-brown towers, sharply cut by deep shadows, with green pine trees here and there bravely clinging to the steep slopes.
The landscape looked almost like a miniature world, as if I were picturing a stone city hundreds of years old. As the sun slowly sank, the light constantly changed. One moment the towers glowed orange and red, a moment later they fell back to cooler tones. I kept clicking, each time hoping to capture just that one perfect play of light and shadow.
At home at the computer, I deliberately chose post-processing that brought out the textures and colours. No excessive drama, but just enough to make the strength of the rock and the depth of the canyon palpable. The end result is a close-up of a grand landscape, captured from a higher vantage point, as if you were standing above it yourself and looking down with it.
