Stone Island, a peninsula on the Brokopondo Reservoir. Fascinating and special about the reservoir are the tree stumps, which are still jaggedly standing. The tropical wood does not rot underwater because no oxygen can reach it. The reservoir was created in the 1960s for the purpose of bauxite processing. For this purpose, about 1,560 square kilometres (slightly larger than the province of Utrecht) of tropical rainforest were flooded. Brownsberg is right next door. Both are about's 130 km from Paramaribo.
