Bridges connect. Roads from A to B, passages over rivers, valleys and buildings. The work shown is a detail from a larger work I made of Maastricht's bridges as they defined Maastricht's north-south skyline. The Roman-designed Saint Servaas Bridge (Aw Brögk) still lies proudly across the river. The stone Wilhelmina Bridge (Nuij Brögk) in front with its classic arches had to make way for new steel bridge after its destruction during the Second World War. Too bad, the Paris-like character of the city was somewhat lost with that. Three bridges have since been added: the Noorderbrug, De Hoog (pedestrian and bicycle bridge) and the President Kennedy Bridge.
