It is located in the municipality of Borger-Odoorn and has about 7,000 inhabitants. The village is known for the Borger Es, a nature reserve that is home to many different species of birds. There are also several hiking and cycling routes in the area, and there are various recreational activities such as fishing, swimming and canoeing. In the village itself there is a museum called 'Het Drentse Landschap' which shows the history and culture of the region.
