Tips for use

About ‘Breakwaters in Ahrenshoop’ by Holger Felix

The Baltic seaside resort of Ahrenshoop, situated on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, has a very special atmosphere whatever the season. It is no coincidence that, since late summer 1889, countless artists have settled here and, over time, created a rich cultural heritage. One of my favourite photographic subjects is the breakwaters, also known as stone walls or piers running parallel to the coast. They are built so wide and solid primarily because they fulfil essential protective functions for the highly vulnerable peninsula. On the one hand, they absorb the extreme force of storm surges and, on the other, they permanently halt sand erosion. This popular Baltic Sea resort is well worth a visit at any time of year. Out of season, Ahrenshoop is wonderfully peaceful and tranquil. It’s a great place to unwind. It is one of the few places on the German Baltic coast that has retained its original character. You’ll find many traditional thatched-roof houses here and very few modern holiday ‘bunkers’.

Holger Felix, born 1959, photographer from Wismar, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. I have been taking pictures since I was seven years old. I started with a simple roll film camera in b/w, model Pouva Start from 1952. In my late youth I got my first analog SLR camera. Today I am using products from Canon.
