About "Brazil"

About the artwork

Brazil, officially the Federal Republic of Brazil or Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil; IPA: [bɾaˈziw]), is a country in South America bordering French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay and the Atlantic Ocean. Brasilia is the capital, São Paulo is the largest city in the country.

With 8.5 million km², Brazil is the largest country in South America, covering almost half of this continent. It is also the fifth largest country in the world; only Russia, Canada, the United States and China are larger. With more than 208 million inhabitants, it is also the seventh largest country measured by population size.

Brazil's original population consisted of Indians who inhabited the tropical coastal belt, the Paraná, São Francisco and Amazon Basins. Colonisation of Brazil began in 1500 with the arrival of seafarer Pedro Álvares Cabral, who declared Brazil a Portuguese colony. Brazil's northern coast fell under Dutch colonial rule for some time in the 17th century. However, the Portuguese Crown steadily expanded its rule and in 1808 the Portuguese court moved from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro. Brazil then became the linchpin of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarve, declaring independence in 1822. The connection to the Portuguese royal house was maintained for several more decades in the Empire of Brazil, but was finally severed with the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889. Alternating democratic and autocratic governments followed one another until the 1980s. Brazil's constitution defines the country as a democratic federal republic.
