Long ago, a large part of the Netherlands consisted of forest. These forests were kept open in some places by large grazers, such as the aurochs and the wisent, as well as by natural disasters, such as forest fires (after lightning strikes) and cyclones. Nowadays, only a fraction of this amount of forest can be found in the Netherlands. Most of it has had to make way for cities, villages and agriculture. Unfortunately, nothing is left of the original primeval forest, but fortunately some relatively old forests can still be found.
