Bomb barge on the Scheveningen beach, Jacob Maris, c. 1885 oil on canvas, h 101.5cm × w 89.5cm.
As many as sixteen times Maris painted a bomb barge at sea. They are studies of air and atmosphere. To avoid the constant change of light, he worked in his studio. He also preferred to choose his colours indoors, because according to Maris, one sometimes had to 'exaggerate in order to learn the power of colours'.
