The Boeing Dreamlifter (formerly Large Cargo Freighter or LCF) is a widebody cargo aircraft based on the Boeing 747-400 and is designed exclusively for carrying Boeing 787 parts.
In autumn 2003, Boeing announced that transport via both land and water were not sufficient for the production of the new Boeing 787 (then known as 7E7). Initially, four used 747-400 aircraft were to be converted to transport parts between Japan, Italy and the United States. The central part of the fuselage was enlarged to create space for complete wings, among other things. Airbus has similar aircraft, the Beluga and the BelugaXL. At 1,840 cubic metres, the Dreamlifter has the second largest aircraft hold in the world. During development, it became clear that a fourth Dreamlifter was needed to keep up with 787 production.
