About the artwork

This was possible because Belgium was self-sufficient throughout the steel production process. Around Liège, for example, there were numerous coal mines from which coal could be used to make coke. There was also plenty of iron ore in the soil. However, the coal mines were exhausted and iron ore had to be imported, which made the production process more expensive and gave rise to more and more competition. It soon became clear that this giant no longer saw salvation in the Liège steel industry and from the point of view of eliminating all competition the blast furnaces were extinguished, leaving thousands of steel workers in the already poor region orphaned.
