The male has a black cap, the female a reddish-brown cap. This colouring is said to be reminiscent of the monks' headgear - which is how the little songbird got its name. The blackcap usually lives hidden in dense undergrowth, where it builds a nest of blades of grass and thin twigs in April. The young birds are incubated and reared together. The blackcap has a beautiful and melodic song. Its call sounds like two pebbles being knocked together.
