The black woodpecker is a woodpecker that does not often show itself. It is a lot larger than the well-known great spotted woodpecker. With its black feathers and red head, however, it is easily recognisable.
They mainly live in coniferous forests, but they prefer to carve their nests in beech trees. Their food consists mainly of ants.
