The godwit is an archetypal Dutch meadow bird. Still is. Because the natural values of agricultural land are under severe pressure. Where farming still leaves room for nature, that is where the godwit thrives. It is the ambassador of agricultural land where production and nature are in balance. Nowhere in Europe do as many black-tailed godwits breed as in the Netherlands. In 2015, the black-tailed godwit was voted national bird by the Dutch public.
Large, slender wader with long legs. Straight bill. In flight broad, white wing stripe, white tail base (square) with black terminal band. Legs protruding. Abdomen with dark bands. Male diamond in splendour plumage to a more brick-red colour than female. In winter brown-grey breast and upperparts.
