The ruddy godwit is the arctic counterpart of the black-tailed godwit, more compact and heavier-built than this one, with shorter legs. In summer plumage, the female is much paler in colour than the male and also has a longer bill. The species is only a migrant and winter visitor in the Netherlands. A true wading bird; you therefore find the largest numbers of black-tailed godwit in the Wadden Sea. They are strong fliers that can migrate long distances in one go.
