The dipper reaches a length of 17 to 20 cm. They are compactly built, with strong legs and a short tail which is sometimes swollen. The plumage is water repellent and dark, but has a white breast. Some subspecies (e.g. cinclus) only have dark brown feathers except the white breast, other subspecies have a lighter brown head and a dark red band under the white breast. In winter, they often dive underwater along the edge of the ice. They can also swim on the surface
