The Ill is a tributary of the Rhine and flows from south to north through Alsace, passing cities such as Mulhouse, Colmar and Strasbourg (Strasbourg). The banks of the Ill are rocky in some places, but predominantly form a combination of alluvial (river depositional) soils, peat soils, and calcareous soils, especially in the Rhine delta.
The black alder (Alnus glutinosa) is a typical tree of wet areas and is common along rivers such as the Ill in Alsace.
