About the artwork

Big Ben in spring in Art Nouveau style

Big Ben is an iconic clock tower that forms part of the Palace of Westminster in London, United Kingdom. The official name of the tower is the Elizabeth Tower, but the nickname "Big Ben" is often used to refer to both the tower and the striking clock inside. Big Ben stands at the north end of the Palace of Westminster, which is the seat of the British Parliament. The palace is located along the River Thames and overlooks Westminster Bridge. The Elizabeth Tower, designed by architect Augustus Pugin, is a striking example of neo-Gothic architecture. The tower is 96 metres high and has a square base with Gothic arches and decorations. At the top of the tower is a viewing platform with magnificent views over London. Big Ben houses an impressive clock known as the Great Bell. This bell weighs about 13.5 tonnes and has a diameter of 2.7 metres. The clock face is also striking and has a diameter of 7 metres. Construction of Big Ben began in 1843 and was completed in 1859. The tower has undergone several restorations since then, but still retains its historic charm.
