The name Bierkade comes from the imported beer that was landed here. Excise duty on the same beer was also levied on this quay in the Excise Tower. The tower was built in 1622 and moved in 1924 to widen the street.
In 2009 the quay wall had to be replaced due to dilapidation. At Bierkade 17 there appeared to be debris in the canal, this debris later appeared to have originated, among other things, from the demolished Schermerpoort.
