About ‘Between the tides and the storm’ by Lex Schulte

An impressive view of the De Kalkman birdwatching hide, situated in the middle of the vast mudflats of Engelsmanplaat. The threatening cloudy sky, the sweeping landscape and the reflection in the shallow water lend the photograph an almost tranquil, cinematic atmosphere. The small group of mudflat walkers emphasises the enormous scale of the landscape, whilst at the same time making the photograph feel human and recognisable.
What is particularly special is the combination of nature, architecture and reflection. The weathered wooden hut stands like a beacon on the empty mudflat, whilst the water reflects the structure and the dark clouds almost seamlessly. A photograph that brings to life the ruggedness, vastness and timelessness of the Wadden Sea.
The Kalkman is a well-known birdwatching hut on Engelsmanplaat, a sandbank in the Wadden Sea between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. The hide is situated in the middle of a dynamic tidal area and is mainly accessible at low tide. Engelsmanplaat is an important resting and foraging place for birds and forms part of the unique Wadden Sea landscape, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
