Bernardo Bellotto, Canaletto's nephew and most talented pupil, painted this important work while working in his uncle's studio. As was customary at the time, this work was sold as Canaletto to one of the many British Grand Tourists visiting Venice.
Pictured here is one of the most recognisable views, looking from the basin of San Marco towards the Molo (quay) overlooking the Piazzetta and the clock tower of San Marco in the middle, flanked by the Biblioteca Marciana and the campanile (bell tower) of San Marco on the left, and the Doge's Palace on the right.
Bernardo Bellotto or Canaletto II (Venice, 20 May 1720 - Warsaw, 17 October 1780) was an Italian painter and etcher. He named himself after his teacher and uncle Canaletto. He mainly painted vedute, i.e. cityscapes.
