The Wall divided Berlin into two halves, East and West, from 1961 to 1989. At a few border crossings, people can get from one part of the city to the other. The border crossing at Bahnhof Friedrichstraße is located in the middle of Berlin; hundreds of travelers cross the border here every day by train, S-Bahn or U-Bahn. Emotional scenes take place in front of the small exit hall with its large windows and flat roof: East Germans say goodbye here to their relatives and friends who are returning to the West or leaving the GDR forever. They have to pass through this hall to get to the West. These are painful farewells, because you don't know when you will see each other again. Many tears flow - at the Palace of Tears.
