Together with the French Cathedral and the Schauspielhaus, the German Cathedral forms a three-part ensemble of buildings, which are located on one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin, the Gendarmenmarkt. The designation "Dom" causes confusion here, however, because the building never had an ecclesiastical function. Rather, the term refers to the architectural form, that is, the tower building with the dome (French "dôme").
The German Church was built in the years 1701 to 1708 according to the designs of Martin Grünberg in the Baroque style. Almost 80 years later, the church was demolished due to dilapidation and rebuilt in neo-baroque style. Between 1780 and 1785, King Frederick II had two almost identical but functionless towers added to the German and French churches according to plans by Carl von Gontard, and it was not until these years that the Gendarmenmarkt took on its present appearance.
