Bentheim Castle, Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael, 1650 - 1682 oil on canvas, h 68cm × w 54cm.
Bentheim Castle still stands there, in the German-Dutch border region, but there are no such high mountains as Ruisdael paints here. Fantasy and reality merge in the painter's work. He made over a dozen paintings of the castle, each in a different mountainous landscape. Ruisdael was rightly called a poet by the famous German writer Goethe in 1816.
