About ‘Beneath the movement’ by Sandra ter Horst

‘Beneath the Movement’ does not depict a dancer, but rather an inner state that becomes visible through movement. The ballerina appears to be turning inwards, her posture demure and vulnerable. The strength in her body is palpable, yet not overpowering — rather, it is supported by something gentler beneath.

The composition emphasises the back and the curved line of the body. The face remains largely hidden, shifting the focus to what is not immediately visible. Movement emerges in the brushstrokes around the skirt, whilst the body itself becomes still.

The skin is built up from soft, transparent layers, in contrast to the loose, expressive brushstrokes in the surroundings. That contrast between control and letting go creates tension and depth. The inspiration comes from moments when you keep moving — carry on — whilst something is happening inside that is not visible to the outside world.

The atmosphere is subdued and intense. The cool tones reinforce the sense of stillness, whilst the movement in the skirt suggests an inner dynamism. This work is about what lies beneath the movement. About strength that does not shout, but is present. In an interior, Beneath the Movement brings tranquillity and depth, with a subtle energy that continues to intrigue.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
