The bee-eater is a bird in the family of bee-eaters. The scientific name of the species was published in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus. He based it on earlier descriptions and illustrations by Pierre Belon, Conrad Gesner, Ulisse Aldrovandi, Francis Willughby and John Ray.
