Bee-eaters live mostly in warm parts of Europe, but successful breeding has also been observed in the Netherlands. Bee-eaters eat insects and are agile flyers. In flight, they catch larger insects. They are mainly found near steep walls of water, such as rivers, ponds and lakes, where they dig a nesting tunnel in a steep wall. Strikingly coloured with blue underparts, yellow throat and back, reddish-brown upperparts and black eyestripe and wing hind edge. Rather long and slightly curved bill. Distinctive in flight by its typical hovering flight and sound. With its pointed wings it cuts through the air. A striking tail with protruding middle tail feathers. Has short legs. The juvenile has a fainter green upper surface. In winter plumage much fainter.
