The North Sea (obsolete West Sea, German Sea is a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a shelf sea and lies in northwestern Europe. Except for the straits near the English Channel and the Skagerrak, it is bounded on three sides by land and opens funnel-shaped to the northeastern Atlantic. Around 80 million people live in a 150-kilometre area along the coast.
The North Sea itself is an important trade route and serves as a route for Central and Northern Europe to the world markets. The southern North Sea, together with the adjacent English Channel, is the most heavily trafficked shipping region in the world. Beneath the seabed are major oil and gas reserves, which have been exploited since the 1970s. Commercial fishing has diminished the sea's fish stocks in recent decades. Environmental changes are also caused by the fact that waste water from Northern Europe and parts of Central Europe flows into the sea directly or via the adjacent Baltic Sea.
