After walking for an hour, from the last place that can be reached by bike you come across a small house on the beach. The "Drowning House. It is a 'remake' of what was once a real house for drowning people, used by people who were shipwrecked off the coast of Terschelling. If you made it to the house, you could hoist the iron ball into the mast so it would be visible from the Brandaris (lighthouse) as a black dot above the house. Until help arrived you could then take shelter in the house. Since then the house has been rebuilt a number of times, it was lost in a storm once, was underwater too often so that the undercarriage gave way and after it was damaged again some time ago it was completely restored and moved further down the beach. A beautiful walk, I even came across seals with this beautiful house as the end point. What more could one want.
