The Faroe Islands (Faroe Islands) (English: Faroe Islands, Faroe Islands: Føroyar, Danish: Færøerne) is an archipelago and autonomous region of Denmark in the North Atlantic Ocean (Europe). The Faeroe Islands consist of 18 islands, of which Streymoy, Eysturoy, Vágar and Suduroy are the largest and best known. The capital of the Faeroe Islands is Tórshavn. A number of large cities on the Faroe Islands are: Klaksvík, Hoyvík and Argir.
The Faeroe Islands owes its name to the many thousands of sheep that still graze on the islands and produce meat and wool. Nevertheless, the economy is largely dependent on fishing because of its favourable location in the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the islands are flat and extensive (highest point: Slættaratindur, 882 metres). The coastlines are mostly rocky with steep cliffs. Tourists often come for walking or cycling and for peace and quiet. These visitors usually reach the islands by boat.
