The Bastei Bridge is the oldest and most famous tourist attraction in Saxon Switzerland (Elbe Sandstone Mountains).
The view over the Elbe valley to the table mountains of Saxon Switzerland and far into the neighbouring landscape of the Lusatian Highlands and the Eastern Ore Mountains is world-famous. At a distance of 130 metres and at a height of 194 metres above the level of the Elbe, the view from the sandstone plateau is unforgettable. The Bastei area with several views is freely accessible all year round.
The existing sandstone bridge was built in 1851. It is 76.50 metres long and has 7 arches spanning the 40-metre-deep gorge known as Mardertelle.
In the background - slightly shrouded in mist - you can see the Lilienstein.
The Lilienstein is one of the most striking mountains in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxony. It is the only table mountain on the right bank of the Elbe and is the symbol of the Saxon Switzerland National Park.
A flat plateau, almost vertical rock faces, a wooded base and open country all around. The 415 metre high Lilienstein is a striking sight. From up here you can enjoy a unique panoramic view of the entire Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
Saxon Switzerland is the name given to the German part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxony. The landscape, characterised by bizarre rock formations, lies south-east of Dresden on both sides of the Elbe in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains.
