Hraunfossar & Barnafoss are two completely different waterfalls located close to each other.
On the banks of the Hvítá River, there is a non-permeable layer beneath the lava field, causing water to flow into the river here for a distance of 1 km. This waterfall is called Hraunfossar (meaning 'lava waterfalls').
Barnafoss, which means 'children's waterfall', is further upstream. This waterfall winds through a narrow gorge in the river. In this river, you can see the remains of a naturally formed arch. This used to serve as a bridge for local residents.
It is said that two children from a nearby farm once fell into the water here and drowned. The mother got desperate and destroyed part of the natural bridge.
Now there is a pedestrian bridge between the two falls.
