The Barn Owl, Tyto alba is a common owl species. It is often found in older barns. It is a night hunter and catches many mice and other small rodents. The barn owl is about 35 cm tall and has a wingspan of 82 - 99 cm. The upper side (back) has a golden brown to slate grey ground colour and is speckled. The underside varies from rusty brown to white and depending on the different subspecies can be completely white to speckled. It is very easy to recognize by its heart-shaped white face (the veil), with the dark eyes directly in front.
