This work presents a bold reinterpretation of Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, executed in the visual language of contemporary street art. The classical serenity of the seventeenth-century portrait is translated into a powerful stencil print, in which black, red and white form the basis. The face is reduced to high-contrast planes and sharp contours, making the girl's gaze direct and confrontational. The iconic pearl remains a subtle but meaningful focal point within this simplified visual language.
The most striking element is the red headscarf, which stands out brightly against the monochrome palette. This red functions not only as a colour accent, but also as a conceptual statement: it breaks the historical distance and places the image resolutely in the present. The background has been kept raw and minimalist, similar to an urban wall, reinforcing its association with stencil art and graffiti. The technique suggests speed and immediacy, while the subject matter is timeless.
The style aligns closely with Banksy's work, with its distinctive use of stencils, limited use of colour and the tension between art history and social commentary. Similar approaches can be found in Banksy's reworkings of classic images, such as modified portraits and iconic figures given a new context. Contemporary street artists like Blek le Rat, who combine classical motifs with stencil technique, also provide a clear parallel. The result is a visually powerful clash between old masters and modern street culture, where recognition and alienation come together.
