Colorful watercolor painting of a traditional banjo with golden and sunburst finish.
The banjo is a stringed instrument with a resonator made of a thin membrane stretched over a frame or chamber. The membrane is commonly circular and composed of plastic, although it can also be constructed of animal skin.
African Americans in the United States created the first versions of the instrument. The banjo is often linked with folk and country music, although it has also appeared in rock and pop music.
The banjo, like the fiddle, is a staple of American music traditions including Bluegrass and old-time music.
Traditional (trad) jazz also makes extensive use of it, as well as Caribbean genres such as Biguine, Calypso, and Mento.
