Bathing tourism on Usedom began in the Baltic seaside resort of Heringsdorf. The first hotel was opened in 1825 and by the end of the century the former fishing colony had developed into the "Nice of the Baltic". Heringsdorf is still one of the most popular holiday resorts on the Baltic Sea today.
Until recently, the Heringsdorf pier on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom was the longest pier in Germany at 508 metres in length.
