About ‘Bago Township: Shwethalyaung Boeddha’ by Maarten Verhees

De Shwethalyaung Boeddha is een liggende Boeddha aan de westkant van Bago (Pegu), Myanmar. De Boeddha, die een lengte heeft van 55 meter en een hoogte van 16 meter, wordt verondersteld te zijn gebouwd in 994, tijdens het bewind van Mon King Migadepa. Het werd verloren in 1757 toen Pegu werd geplunderd. Tijdens de Britse koloniale heerschappij, in 1880, werd de Shwethalyaung Boeddha herontdekt onder een dekmantel van jungle-groei. De restauratie begon in 1881 en Boeddha's mozaïekkussens (aan de linkerkant) werden in 1930 toegevoegd.
