Beautiful ancient glazed tiles symbolising a lion in three-dimensional form, from the gates of ancient Babylon (Iraq).
The lion is the symbol of Babylon and represents Ishtar, the goddess of fertility, love and war. The lion not only symbolises Babylon, but also instils fear in enemies. Some'120 lions were made in multicoloured relief tiles for the processional road to Babylon's northern entrance, the Ishtar Gate, and Nebuchadnezzar's Throne Room.
Several museums around the world own these multicoloured lions, but most of them are still in the Pergamon Museum, placed in a reconstructed processional road towards the reconstructed Ishtar Gate.
