The BMW M1 Procar is a legendary racing variant of the BMW M1, created for the one-make Procar Championship that accompanied Formula One weekends in 1979 and 1980. Built by BMW Motorsport with input from Lamborghini and later completed by Baur, the M1 Procar transformed the already exotic road-going M1 into a fierce competition machine. Its mid-mounted 3.5-liter inline-six, equipped with advanced mechanical fuel injection and extensive tuning, produced around 470–500 horsepower, delivering thrilling performance and a distinctive high-revving sound. Wide bodywork, aggressive aerodynamics, and racing suspension gave the Procar exceptional grip and presence on track. The series famously featured top Formula One drivers—such as Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet—competing in identical cars, making for intensely close racing. Although short-lived, the Procar Championship cemented the M1’s status as a motorsport icon, and the Procar variant remains one of BMW’s most admired and collectible racing machines.
