The B-2 Spirit is an American strategic bomber with stealth technology (stealth bomber) for intercontinental distances. The aircraft is capable of dropping both conventional and nuclear weapons. It has a shape which for that time seemed unique, but was already used by Nazi Germany in the construction of the Horten Ho 229.
The B2 is equipped with technology (such as special radar-absorbing paint) which makes the aircraft almost invisible on radar.
The U.S. Air Force first planned to buy a large number of these aircraft from aircraft manufacturer Northrop. Eventually, by the end of the Cold War in the early 90s, only 21 aircraft were purchased. Due to the high already spent development costs and the drastically reduced number of aircraft, the price per aircraft rose to over 2 billion dollars. This means that the aircraft is literally worth its weight in gold.
The operational home of the B-2 is Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, but maintenance is done at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
