Elswout in Overveen is one of the oldest preserved estates in the Netherlands with a park-like vegetation with many stately plants and historic buildings. Elswout is part of the Natura 2000 area National Park Zuid-Kennemerland.
Elswout was founded by Carl Jansz. du Moulin (1587/88-after 1667), a merchant of Flemish Lutheran origin who from an early age traded mainly on Russia. From 1623, he grew to become one of the Republic's most important Russia traders. In Russia, where Du Moulin lived for long periods in a row, he obtained as a recognition of his merits the title 'gost' (guest), i.e. the highest and at the same time the least occurring merchant rank
