An overcast day in September, occasional watery sunshine shining on the mountains surrounding The Poisoned Glen. The valley is in Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal Ireland, amid the rugged landscape of the Derryveagh Mountains.
Why is this beautiful area called The Poisoned Glen?
One story is that mistranslation from Irish to English caused the confusion, and that the correct name should be 'Heavenly Glen' (the Irish word for heaven is neamh and the Irish word for poison is neimhe). Another story is that the king of Tory, Balor, had a beautiful daughter whom he locked up in a tower, out of sight of men. However, her beauty spread and she was kidnapped and taken to Magheroarty. Balor followed her, captured her and killed her captor with a giant stone. At the entrance to The Poisoned Glen stands such'a stone, and it is said to be Balor's poisoned eye.
