About ‘Aungmyethazan Township: Sandamuni pagoda’ by Maarten Verhees

Sandamani pagode is een boeddhistische stupa ten zuidwesten van de heuvel van Mandalay. Het werd in 1874 in opdracht van koning Mindon Min gemaakt ter nagedachtenis aan de jongere broer van Mindon Min, Kanaung Mintha, die samen met 3 prinsen, Malun, Saku en Maingpyin werd vermoord tijdens de opstand van Myingun Prince in 1866. De pagode werd opgericht op de voorlopige locatie van het koninklijk paleis, de Nanmyay Bontha.Deze pagode bevat de graven van de Kanaung, Sagu Mintha, Malun en Maingpyin Princes. Het bevat ook een ijzeren beeld van de Boeddha gegoten door Bodawpaya in 1802, en verwijderd uit Amarapura door Mindon in 1874. Het standbeeld weegt naar verluidt 40.924,8 ponden.
