The puffin of Grímsey
Far off the north coast of Iceland lies Grímsey, a small island where the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Circle meet. In summer, the island is transformed into a bustling world of birds. Amidst the green cliffs and the endless blue of the sea lives one of Iceland’s most beloved inhabitants: the Atlantic puffin.
When spring arrives, thousands of puffins return to Grímsey. They seek out their old nesting sites, often hidden in hollows amongst the grass and rocks. With their colourful beaks, white chests and dark backs, they almost look as if they’ve been painted against the green landscape.
There is constant activity on the cliffs. Puffins fly back and forth, disappearing briefly over the ocean to forage for food before returning to their partners and chicks. Sometimes one sits quietly on the edge of the cliff, seemingly unmoved as the strong wind sweeps across the island.
It is precisely this combination of rugged nature, solitary cliffs and thousands of seabirds that makes Grímsey so special. Here, the puffin does not feel like a tourist attraction, but like a natural part of an age-old Icelandic landscape.
