The summit cross of the Fellhorn rises above the rugged ridges of the Allgäu, a proud 2038 metres above sea level. It stands there like a silent sentinel, firmly anchored and held by steel cables, and tells of all the hikers who have travelled this path - with rapid breath, pounding hearts and shining eyes at the sight of the vastness. Behind the cross, the striking silhouettes of the mountains line up: the Schüsser with its 2259 metres, the Hochgehrenspitze almost as high next to it, and the Walser Hammerspitze, somewhat gentler but no less impressive. Each of these peaks has its own face, moulded by millions of years of wind, weather and time.
The panorama is of a clarity that takes your breath away: a sky so deep blue that it looks like a canvas on which the light of the sun spreads. The grey rocks stand in stark contrast to the green meadows that spread out further down, interspersed with bright splashes of colour from alpine flowers. Up here, on the roof of the Allgäu, you can feel the silence - only the wind tells its stories. It is a place of contemplation, humility and freedom, a place where heaven and earth almost touch.
