The sun is not yet up but the sky reveals the first colors of the day. The night colors are slowly driven away by the first light of the sun that is still hiding behind the horizon. The moon is just shining in the night blue. It is windless and a light morning mist hangs over the water of the fens. The Hatertse vennen at its most beautiful. This nature reserve near Nijmegen is a popular place to photograph the sunrise. At the end of the summer the heather starts to bloom purple, giving the landscape a beautiful glow.Hatertse en Overasseltse Vennen is a fen area of about 520 hectares in the municipalities Heumen and Wijchen, Gelderland province. The area consists of about twenty named fens and the surrounding river dune, heathland and forest area. The area lies southwest of Nijmegen. Once this area, southwest of Nijmegen, was created by the Waal and the Maas. Both rivers are now some distance away, but because of the river clay they left behind you can now enjoy the more than 20 fens.
