A woman and a girl are sleeping on the waterfront. A small dog is also sleeping. Behind them four water birds, swans in the water.
The model for the sleeping figure in this painting is Bunny's wife, Jeanne. They had met in 1895 and married in 1902. She would become his main model; her graceful form and sensual features were repeated in countless works and embodied Bunny's feminine ideal.
In this work, Bunny incorporated a red rose, traditionally a symbol of love and sensual power, as well as a white swan, a symbol of grace and beauty and a recurring motif of Belle Époque culture. The little dog is often used by artists to symbolize marital fidelity.
Rupert Charles Wulsten Bunny (Melbourne, September 29, 1864 - May 25, 1947) was an Australian painter.
Bunny's early work was heavily influenced by the English Pre-Raphaelites, with aestheticist and neoclassical tendencies, with great attention to detail. After 1900 his style became looser, more impressionistic, and he mainly painted portraits and landscapes in a typical fin de siècle atmosphere.
