Potrait of a fish-eating Asian clawed otter, the smallest species of otter.
The Asian clawed otter lives in Asia. In India, China and Southeast Asia, you can encounter this otter species in the wild. They live mainly in wet areas, such as mangroves, swamps and rivers. The hunting area of the chubby otters can be very large, as much as 30 square kilometers. Within their area, the otters have fixed paths and routes. They mark these by regularly depositing a delicious steaming pile of manure. They also rub their bodies against trees, stones and everything else. Intruders are certainly not welcome in the area! Small otters only have partial webbing between their toes, making them the worst swimmers among the otters. These otters are therefore more often found on land. Their small round ears and nose are adapted to life in the water. They can close them off underwater. Underneath the brown hair they have a very dense and fluffy undercoat, which keeps the otters warm when they swim.
